Currently the society is transiting from the conventional setting to a more contemporary setting. This present the current student with challenges that were not there before. The ministry of education found it necessary to begin Guidance and Counseling in institutes of higher learning.
The departments are given the task of coordinating all the activities that relate to Guidance and Counseling in the institute. This include
specific topics affecting the students.
- Organizing open forums, orientation talks on issues and
- Collecting and disseminating information useful to the institute’s community
- Handling and coordinating issue that affects the performance of both student and staff.
- Issues related to bursary.
The Guidance and Counseling department looks forward to the day it will be able to reach out to the Kiambu community through the peer counseling club on issues affecting the community.
The finance function is central to any organization. The strength or weakness of the finance function will mean the difference between failure and success of any entity.
KIST finance department derives authority from Public Financial Management regulations and other statutory and regulatory provisions.
The department is charged with the responsibility of designing and implementing sound and effective systems for the management of Institute resources.
Currently the department has staff strength of 4 headed by the Finance Officer who is responsible to the Principal.
In order to address challenges with regard to efficiency in service delivery the following developments has been undertaken:-
- Recruitment and training of staff in professional competence.
- Implementation of Information Management System in finance where accounts records are updated in real time.
- Participated in tandem with other departments/units of the Institute in development of strategic plans, performance contracts, ISO quality management system and service delivery instruments which are guiding the Institute to achieve its Vision and Mission.
- The department works hand in hand with procurement and human resource department to ensure compliance with statutory obligations.
I encourage the staff in the department to familiarize themselves with all the statutory requirements that guide us in execution of our duties in order to ensure compliance with our Quality Management System now that the Institute is ISO 9001:2008 certified and statutory obligations. Keep on the good work.

The procurement Department is committed to vigorously improve its services to users so that they, in turn become more efficient and effective in their delivery of services.
The purpose of procurement is to ensure that right quality; available at the right time; at the right place; in the right quantity; at the right price; right specifications subject to the availability of funds.
Role of the Procurement Department
The Procurement Department is headed by the Supply Chains Officer who reports to the Principal. The Department is committed to serving KIST community with timely and cost effective procurement of goods and services. The department executes the procurement mandate and also provides advisory services on procurement to the Institute’s Management to ensure compliance with the specified requirements in accordance with the Constitution of Kenya 2010, Public Procurement and Asset Disposal Act 2015 (PPAD), Public Procurement and Disposal Regulations provided by PPRA and other laws, regulations and policy documents in the Institute & Kenya.
The Core Functions of the Department entail:-
Formulation, interpretation and implementation of the procurement policies and procedures; Operationalization and implementation of all procurement laws and regulations;
Preparation of annual and periodic procurement plans and reports;
Development of specifications in liaison with user departments;
Prequalification of supplier and sourcing of suppliers;
Evaluation of tender documents and presentation to tender committee for adjudication;
Supplier appraisal on measuring performance of suppliers for goods, works and services; Maintenance of procurement records; Disclosure of information on procurement opportunities and contract award;
Management of the inventory of the institute;
Providing advisory services on procurement to the Institute
Verification and disposal of obsolete and surplus materials.
